Here’s an excellent sentence – a coruscating little gem of pith and understatement – from Wikipedia’s entry Alcoholic Beverage:

People under the influence of alcohol sometimes find themselves in dangerous or compromising situations where they would not be had they remained sober.

Now that’s good writing. Just think of the ocean of individual human experiences captured in those twenty-three words.

Can’t imagine what put that in my mind this morning, but there it is.

    Have you ever read the poet Li Po? (Take your pick, they’re all about drinking). A sample:

    Such is the rapture of the wine,
    That the sober shall never inherit.
