  1. Thanks for the shout-out. I’m not really satisfied with that essay (especially since the bulk of it is recycled from other posts), and I may go back and revise some of it. I wanted to say more about Fingarette’s thinking in general; over at Dr. V’s site a little while back, there was a link to an article about Fingarette and his thoughts on… I think it was on drunk driving. The upshot was that Fingarette took the politicaly incorrect view of assigning blame to the drunkard and not allowing him off the hook with the claim that “alcoholism is a disease.” I need to read more deeply on this, but I suspect that Fingarette and I both agree that diseases and compulsions are not the end of the story when it comes to freedom and responsibility.
