There is horrible news breaking from Tucson, where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat and supporter of “immigration reform” has apparently been assassinated in a mass shooting. (As of 3:13 EST it is still not certain that she has died, though several news agencies are reporting that she was killed.)
Not only is this a despicable crime and a harrowing tragedy for the nation, but it is also certain to become a hugely polarizing political event in the next hours and days. It is still unclear who the shooter was, but already, commenters on various websites are spinning it for all it’s worth.
Update, 5 p.m. – It appears that Congresswoman Giffords has survived this attack, though she has been grievously wounded, and others have died, including a nine-year-old child. Meanwhile, NRO is reporting that the shooter’s name is a young white man named Jared Lee Loughner, and that he has a YouTube page, here (for now). He is obviously not sane.
