Synesthesia

What’s your favorite color? Mine are the darker blues and greens; best of all are the deep and aqueous tones in between.

The blues and greens are horizontal, and patient, and extended in time, like the sea and the sky and forest; the reds and yellows and oranges are vertical, and call us to the present moment — like fire, and blood, and flowers, and ripe fruits.

  1. Mountain colors: earth tones, blues and whites (as in a rushing stream or mountain waterfall, not to mention lakes and skies), and the green of trees. Interlaken, Switzerland, basically, and some parts of South Korea that evoke a sylvan idyll. Korean temples and monks’ robes also have these colors– stone, earth, water, wood, sky. They all evoke a strangely comfortable dynamic settledness.

Typically schizoid, I waver between the deep blues and greens of northern lakes and forests and the muted browns and greens of the high desert.
