Destroying Civilization, By Degrees

  1. This course, offered at Emerson, stands out, so to speak:

“Puppetry”. “The course culminates in the construction of puppets for in-class presentations,” which is really all you need to know. Plus, puppets are pretty popular right now. I’ll be the first to say it: This class will make you a hit with the ladies.

“A hit with the ladies”, indeed. Especially the section on meat puppets!

  3. Relax, folks. With their advanced degrees, these graduates can all go into the service industry . . .

Off topic, but I was just curious….if you don’t mind answering, do you have any Jewish ancestry?

I do not. My mother was born and raised in Scotland, and her lineage is Scottish back to the dawn of time. (Clan Cawdor of Campbell, to be specific: I was named for Malcolm, Thane of Cawdor, an ancestor.)

My father was raised in London, and his roots are Cornish, Welsh, and Scottish (our family name, I just found out a few years ago, is actually Pollock, not Pollack — the spelling change was a mistake that was made, and stuck, when we all entered the US in 1956).

So — not Jewish at all. Celtic through and through. I am, however, an unapologetic supporter of Israel.

My turn now: if you don’t mind answering, are you perhaps associated with the JDL?

I am Jewish and do participate in some Jewish organizations, but the JDL is not one of them.

I thought you might be Jewish from your surname.

Anyway, I appreciate the blog and your support for Israel.

I saw the headline and thought that you were making an about-face on global warming.

    To quote Rick Perry: oops.

  8. I thought you were Polish, Malcolm. “Polak” means “Polish man” (in Polish), “Polka” being the feminine of “Polak”, meaning “Polish woman”.

Yes, I knew that about “Polak”, of course. (You don’t get to be 55 years old with my last name without finding these things out.) A lot of Polish immigrants with unpronounceable surnames ended up just being “Pollack” once they had passed through Ellis Island.

The Scottish name “Pollock” has something to do with a Gaelic word meaning “pool”, and is also a variant of the name “Polk”.

Sorry, AR. There’s a fellow with your name who is associated with the JDL in LA; I thought you might be him.
