What say you, readers? Is this child abuse?

  1. I’m reminded of moment 3:06 of this classic scene.

Interesting: so many people passing by here every day, and nobody has an opinion about this? I’m always curious to see which posts will generate a lot of comments, but I’m surprised this one hasn’t.

Well, here’s my opinion: yes. Sex is such a fundamental axis of human socialization and self-identification that to deliberately isolate your child from normal developmental cues along that axis as an expression of your own radical social ideology — to use your child as a political pawn (and psychological guinea pig) as this woman has — is shamefully cruel, and is, moreover, selfish in a way that makes a mockery of motherly love.

About the lack of comments, I thought it was a rhetorical question. But yes, it is abusive.

  4. I think this woman’s concern has to do with gender stereotyping rather than any issue having to do with the sex of her child. Nevertheless, I agree that her “policy” of gender-neutral upbringing of the child is very abusive psychologically.

But does it qualify as sexual abuse? Discuss.
