Bay State Blues

Drove up to Massachusetts this evening; stopped in Orleans to pick up supplies. The place seemed to be in a somber mood, for some reason. From the snatches of conversation I overheard, it seems some local chap by the name of Welker must have died, or is going to die, or something. Couldn’t quite make sense of it.

  1. I chortle with the rest of New Yawk. I so, so needed the Patriots to lose. And the Good Lord came through.

  3. I’m neither a Pats nor a Jints fan (I still root for the Brooklyn Dodgers). But you guys show little class kicking Welker, who is a pretty good receiver, when he is down.

Sure, he made a very rare drop (for him) at a most inopportune time, but Brady allowed a safety on his first down, and lots of other mistakes were made by both teams, including the coaches (allowing 12 men on the field is the coach’s fault). The refs made mistakes too.

I feel bad for Welker. He’ll torment himself over it for the rest of his life. What do you get out of taunting him?

Well, let’s hope he doesn’t repeat the experience of Billy Buckner, who was so distraught after the Series that he walked through the streets of Boston intending to commit suicide. Luckily, a bus went through his legs.

Who’s kicking anyone? Just reporting on the local mood.

Anyway, speaking of kicking, the person most deserving of pity in this post-season (if he isn’t already dangling from a rafter somewhere) is Billy Cundiff, the first-rate placekicker whose missed chip-shot field goal allowed the Patriots to get to the Super Bowl in the first place.

  8. Sorry, Peter, I can only accept a limited number of FB invitations from lefty schmucks. If the Waxman defriends me (the odds are good) I’ll let you know.
