Diplomad on Conservatism

With a hat-tip to several readers who emailed me with the link, here’s a thoughtful essay by Lewis Amselem.

  1. Thank you for the link, Malcolm. For me, the money quote is:

For at least the past 45 years, I have considered myself a conservative, even a libertarian–well, libertarian with an asterisk (I believe in a large and fearsome military establishment). For part of my early life, I was a vaguely centrist, apolitical sort, but one who thought that America and the West were pretty much the best places to live. My great epiphany came while studying at UCLA in the early 1970s. I was appalled by the liberal mindset, even back then, which sought to denigrate America and its history, to ridicule and demean the great achievements of Western Civilization, and to point to some other system as “better.” I had lots of doubts about this line of thinking, but just did not have the intellectual confidence to speak up and offer a counterargument.

I could have written these same words while only changing the words “45 years” to “15 years” and “studying at UCLA in the early 1970s” to “conducting scientific research at LANL on September 11, 2001″. In defense of my tardiness in having the same epiphany as the author of the article, I did not have any formal education in sociology beyond my social studies courses in high school.

  2. Whitewall says

Henry, that was a fine post that Diplomad wrote. A very good parallel to some of my past when I was in school in central Europe. For me, the best part was… “Much of it reminds me of the debates one saw in communist-socialist movements as different factions argued over which held truer to St. Karl’s vision. These debates often turned bloody as various factions of the left, e.g., Stalinists, Trotskyites, Anarchists, Fascists, turned on and murdered each other.”

That quote is some of what I have written before here and elsewhere. The Left will do that. We non leftists need not do that. We simply keep the pressure on them and tighten the screws a little at a time.

By the way, with your photo there, his blog never looked so good;)

  3. Thanks, Robert. I guess you refer to my photo at age 7 (taken from my green card ID), which I use for my online avatar. Back then, I believed that America was about as close as one gets to heaven before dying.

Nowadays, I no longer believe in heaven and my view of it as heaven on earth has been attenuated. Nevertheless, I still believe America is way ahead of whatever place on earth is in second place.

  4. P.S.

Anytime some American threatens to leave America if such-and-such transpires, I want to shout, “Could I have that in writing, please?”
