    Maybe old people always think the world is going to hell and maybe they’re always right. For example, I know for a fact that we just aren’t as smart as people were in the 19th century. Letters from poor “uneducated” servants back to the home folks in the Victorian era would be called high college level today.

    As Chesterton says, he knew men in previous times in Scotland were more intelligent because they could follow a sermon all the way to “17th and lastly”.
