How one thing leads to another! With my glory days as a globe-trotting big-shot recording engineer behind me (for now at least), I earn my daily crust in a small cubicle in midtown Manhattan, writing C++ code for a medium-sized global corporation. It is now 9:15 P.M., and as is so often the case, I am still here in the office (whence all but I have fled), trying to get some software to work.

Earlier today someone mentioned Donald Knuth, the great programming pioneer and all-round Renaissance man, and as I sat at my computer just now waiting for my compiler to do its work, I looked him up on Wikipedia to see what it had to say about him. I discovered that among his many distinguished achievements, he had even written an article for MAD magazine back in 1957, on the “Potrzebie System of Weights and Measures” (which, as I also found out, is an available system of units in Google Calculator).

All this led me in turn to Wikipedia’s List of unusual units of measurement and List of humorous units of measurement, where I learned about such useful quantities as the beard-second, the attoparsec, the microfortnight, and my favorite of the lot, the Sheppey, which is “A measure of distance equal to about 7⁄8 of a mile (1.4 km), defined as the closest distance at which sheep remain picturesque.”

Hey, the compiler’s done, and no errors! Gotta run. Back in a few millifriedmans.

Tonight a cold front has moved through the Northeast, and suddenly it feels like fall outside, which is always just fine with me. If there’s one thing I detest (and longtime readers will know that’s something of a lowball estimate), it’s a hot September. But right now there’s a cool, crisp breeze coming through the open window, and after the beastly summer we’ve all been through, it is very refreshing indeed.

Meanwhile, the little clash-of-civilizations drama that has had everyone all wound up of late has descended into low comedy. Terry Jones, the tinpot Florida preacher who absurdly set the world on fire by threatening to do the same to a few leaves of paper, is now jerking his captive world-wide audience back and forth like a yo-yo as he waffles about whether he’s actually going to Do the Deed or not. As I understand the latest dispatches, he either did, or did not, make some sort of arrangement with Feisal “Good Cop” Rauf about the location of that triumphal mosque, in consideration of which he might, or might not, be willing to stay his hand, thereby sparing the world further (yawn) Muslim ire. World leaders, media titans, and the commanders of the world’s mightiest army tremble with helpless anxiety as an utterly insignificant little pisher from Gainesville toys with a book of matches.

I don’t think I have ever seen anything like it in my 54 years.

The latest update seems to be that the august Mr. Rauf, saintly builder of bridges, uniter of riven cultures, America’s official knight-errant of tolerance, and a man without an ulterior bone in his body, isn’t about to let this malignant little mountebank, this upstart farceur, this small-bore sky-pilot, upset his protection racket — in which the “deeply sensitive” Imam, though yearning with all his heart to move his triumphal 9/11 victory mosque somewhere else to ease America’s spiritual anguish, must sadly keep it right where it is for the sake of “national security”. Mr. Jones, therefore, seems likely once again to be making his incendiary statement on Saturday.

I know what you are thinking: this has really gone beyond absurdity; it is a disgraceful media and political circus. What we need is a wise and sober figure, some universally respected solon of unimpeachable sagacity and gravitas, to discipline these squabbling children, and bring this whole embarrassing mess to a swift and dignified conclusion.

Wait! Our prayers may have been answered. We have just learned that Donald Trump has waded into the fray, and will soon put things to rights.

The latest tempest in the media teapot appears to be something called “i-dosing“, in which hellbound teens listen to brain-addling audio signals to get high. From what I have learned so far, it appears that the audio plays various tricks with what we audio weenies call “binaural beats”, a pulsating perceptual phenomenon that occurs when tones of slightly different frequencies are played into each ear (this is the same “beating” that musicians sometimes use to tune their instruments).

It is true that the brain is susceptible to various sorts of rhythmic stimuli: strobe lights, for example, can cause seizures, and binaural beats where the beat frequency is around 10 Hz can resonate with the brain’s alpha waves, with a calming effect. So I won’t immediately dismiss the whole thing as nonsense, but it is almost certainly nothing to get excited about. That hasn’t stopped the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, however, who are calling for the practice to be banned (good luck with that, as it requires nothing more than an audio oscillator, or even two musical instruments recorded just slightly out of tune).

Meanwhile, if you want to try it out for yourself, and don’t mind spending a little dough, you can cop right here. Do let me know how it goes.

While I was away this weekend, paying scant attention to the news, a serious brouhaha seems to have erupted in the global-warming community. Apparently a hacker got hold of, and made public, emails and internal documents from the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia — a major center for AGW study — and they appear to contain evidence of grave improprieties involving the rigging and politicization of research and publication. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Blogger Dennis Mangan has already picked up the story (his post’s title may somewhat overstate the case, though again it may not); have a look here.

Feeling tired? Listless? Maybe all you need is some concentrated water. Just add water.

I was tipped off to this audacious scam by a recent item in the Washington Post about the high-end bottled-water business, and the enterprising hucksters who manage to lighten their customers’ wallets by as much as $480 for “special edition” bottlings of Adam’s ale (no, I am not making this up).

But for sheer moxie it would be hard to top the folks at Quantum Nutritionals, LLC., makers of Hydra Booster (i.e. water) — who inform us that most of us suffer from a collapsed Quantum Energy Field. Fortunately, though, help is on the way:

Hydra Booster Contains a Powerful Natural Polarity and Carries the Full Range of Frequencies Found in Your Body’s Quantum Energy Field.

For only ten dollars a pint, here’s what you get, according to Dr. Paul Yanick:

Hydra Booster transforms ordinary water into a liquid crystal state of coherent energy that harmonizes and strengthens the body’s Quantum Energy Field and innate healing capabilities.

A “liquid crystal state of coherent energy”. Wow!

(Here’s Dr. Yanick, in case you were worried that he might just be some sort of some smooth-talking flim-flam man who can’t be trusted:)

Nothing I could say here would do this “product”, or these people, justice: that, I’m afraid, would require some hot tar, a bushel of feathers, and a fence-rail, if not the nearest lamp-post. But do go and look at their website. I doubt very much, Dear Reader, that you are fool enough to hand over any of your money, but it will certainly take your breath away.
