We’ll Just Have to Carry On Somehow
We note that Jerry Falwell, the prominent religious extremist, sanctimonious prig, and bigot, has died. This is the man who, on September 13th, 2001, said:
I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say “you helped this happen.”
Civility discourages me from further comment.
Toodle-oo, Jerry. Don’t let the door hit ya where the dog shoulda bit ya.

On a somewhat related topic: despite rising Islamic fundamentalism, between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Muslims marched through Istanbul a week or two ago in favor of secularism.
The most populous Muslim Nation – Indonesia – is a hotbed of placidity.
In your view, does this contradict your frequently voiced depictions of Muslims as violent, intolerant, and backwards?

This is one of those days when I find myself wishing that there was a hell.

Hi Peter,
I don’t recall saying that all Muslims are violent, intolerant, and backwards; it was heartening to see that there are finally some who find the behavior of their coreligionists troubling enough to object to. We can use all the help we can get.

Hi Bob,
I think we secular types will have to be satisfied with the thought that there will be no trip to heaven on the itinerary.

I think the short article by Larry Flint on Jerry Falwell is interesting
