We’ve just watched the 37-year-old Derek Jeter launch his 3000th career hit (that’s a pretty big deal in these parts, and Gotham has been on pins and needles for weeks). Jeter’s never worn any uniform other than the pin-stripes, so all of those hits were for the Yankees — and to add a spectacular touch, the historic blow was a home run (only his third of the year).
Yes, yes, mere frivolity, perhaps — but a nice diversion from the doom and gloom all around us. That’s what sports are for.
I wonder who’s got that ball!

Pretty awesome for an old guy (37) playing short. I was surprised to learn he is the first Yankee to make it to 3000 hits (he is the 28th player to get there).
Yep.
Update: that ball was caught by one Chris Lopez, a 24-year-old cellphone salesman. He gave it to Jeter. (A touching gesture — not at all sure I’d have done the same.)
Just flat-out gave it to Jeter? No money changed hands? That ball is worth real money in the open market, no? And Jeter is not a pauper, is he?
Just handed it over, yes.
The Yankees have apparently rewarded him with luxury-box seats for the rest of the year, and other gratuities. Jeter may chip in something too, I’d imagine.
Do those luxury-seats include all the hot-dogs you can eat? With free mustard?
Doom and gloom? What doom and gloom? Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Indeed, life is really good here in the U.S. We grow our own food, print our own currency and are homebase to google, apple, facebook, walmart, etc.
Yes, and the first three companies are within a fifteen mile radius of where I live. So life is really good around here.
