Christmas Eve, World At War

Here’s a time capsule from December 24th, 1941, seventy years ago today: Christmas Eve remarks from the White House lawn by Franklin D. Roosevelt and the visiting Winston Churchill. The US had just entered the war; Britain had until a fortnight earlier stood alone against the Nazis, and since September had endured the horrors of the Blitz.

This was a far different era of Western civilization. It’s hard to imagine that it was within living memory of many who are still with us.
