  1. I was quizzical until I cheated and read the comments. The basic idea is that there’s no way to stop Black’s “a” pawn, so let it queen itself. Meanwhile, White positions the king at e2, which means the king can’t move from then on, once the queening has occurred; at the same time White shuffles the rest of its pieces until they can’t move, either–et voilÁ : a forced stalemate.

    Right. The nicest part is the corralling of the Black K at h8.
