Back On Top!

It’s Oysterfest weekend in Wellfleet once again, and your humble correspondent has reclaimed his crown at the annual Spelling Bee. I realize that by now most of you have likely already heard — I’m sure it’s all over the national media — but I thought the rest of you would like to know.

  1. Congrats! What was your winning word?

  2. Malcolm says

“Chondrophore”. It’s the little cavity that supports the cartilage in the hinge of a bivalve. The guy in second had just tripped over “siliceous”.

  3. I assume that’s pronounced “KAAN-druh-FOR.” How’s the other one pronounced? “Suh-LEE-see-uhss”? “Suh-LISH-uhss,” like “delicious”?

English is obviously too easy for you. They need to host a spelling bee in honor of Tolkien. All the words will be in the romanized versions of Quenya and the Black Speech of Mordor. Diacritical marks must be mentioned when spelling the words.

Do you think, when you entered the contest, that your fellow contestants started grumbling, “Christ, it’s that Malcolm guy again!”?

At this point, they may be doing just that, and I’ll confess that troubles me. (Though the Conan in me — that’s the barbarian, not the talk-show host — says “let them grumble!”)

Maybe I’ll give myself a bye next year.

  8. HJH,

“Chick” Corea may have brought jazz (and soul?) south of the 38th, but there is no Seoul in the north.
