I think it’s safe to say that this The New Republic article — The White Protestant Roots of American Racism — is the worst piece of “journalism” you’re going to see all day. I was about to give it the severe beating it deserves — particularly with respect to Puritanism, Calvinist soteriology, and the central role of American Protestants in the abolitionist movement — but the comment-thread at the article itself has already done a pretty fair job, it seems.

TNR was once a respectable organ of the Left. No longer.

Given the prominence of “racism” in today’s lexicon of moral opprobrium, it is curious that the word itself is of very recent vintage. Indeed, it is a neologism so recent that it does not appear in the 1971 Oxford English Dictionary. The Supplement to our edition of the OED (printed in 1961) introduces “racialism”–the “tendency to racial feeling; antagonism between different races of men”–but fails to provide an equivalent of our multipurpose imprecation “racism.” (A later edition managed to turn up an instance of the word from the early 1930s.) Perhaps that fact is itself evidence of a particularly insidious form of racism–all the more insidious because unacknowledged. Or perhaps that fact, along with the recentness of the word in any currency, suggests that there is something artificial, manufactured, or even cynically manipulative about the tort it describes. Doubtless there are spokesmen for both alternatives.

It was nice to see the comments take the article totally apart. This is what I don’t get about so called “paid journalist.” Don’t these idiots know that there are things called books, google, and lots of smart people. Anything you write is going to be analyzed and critiqued. So, you’d think these idiots would try to get a handle on what it is they are writing about. What are the doctrinal differences between calvanists, puritans, and baptists. I am also glad to see there is backlash against trying to shame caucasians for the sin of being born caucasian.

TNR seems to be content with their status of re working and repeating original Communist Doctrine. In stead of class and wealth, it is religion and race. White Guilt has become a necessity for the Progressive narrative as well as the individual progressive as his belief in this junk narrative allows him to be a moral person. Thus he grovels in guilt as if it is principle…principled groveling. Blacks as perpetual victims have learned how to put this guilt to good use as a reason for anything and everything they do, no matter how self destructive. If law enforcement or a politician or anyone else runs afoul of their right to “act aggrieved”, then we have social unrest as soon as the media can get there.

The people quoted in the TNR piece seem to rejoice in the lessening of religion and patriarchy in everyday life. This, if successful, is a death sentence for minorities and the poor in general. For every demonstration or riot in a Baltimore, Chicago, or Cleveland or Ferguson, their is within a few minutes drive, a community of the same people literally dying from the lack of patriarchy, religion or even property.

Thomas Sowell has a knack for making things clear..“If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 60 years ago, a liberal 30 years ago and a racist today.”

    Whitewall,

Here’s some NRx commentary on the importance of patriarchy. (I’d have written the thing rather differently, but it makes some essential points.)

Malcolm, thanks. That is a stunning link. It seems our present world might just be ripe for a return of “patriarchy” of some type. I have always believed in the inherent goodness of women. At some point, females will begin to call a halt to this culture raping cancer of “feminism” in its present form.
