Goodbye, Columbus

Cambridge, Massachusetts, today joined the list of communities that have renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

“Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”

  1. Silvio Dante would be pissed.

Christopher (The Sopranos): see the third episode of the show’s fourth season.

I know the actor/musician who played SD. I’m sure he’s all for it.

    !Uh.

This is one hadn’t crossed my desk yet .. or, I missed it.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day you say they call it?

I’m foreseeing “some people”‘re gonna be issuing forth a bunch of stuff related to/on the punctuation forthwith.

(I hope there’s been a “think-thru” on the setting up of an adequate number of safe places for all the trauma apostrophes are bound to trigger.)

    Hi JK,

Ha! I had the same thought.

I’m not sure that the apostrophe-placement is canonical here. I had originally put it before the ‘s’, but then decided to transcribe it verbatim from the linked article. It could also work with no apostrophe at all, which is probably best.

  5. Being a bandmate of Springsteen’s, it’s no surprise that Van Zandt is a liberal. But that doesn’t diminish his great portrayal of Tony Soprano’s consigliere, Silvio.

I’m thinking a hyphen would be the more appropriate.

I mean like it’s so arbitrary an’ all you understand …

Yep. Definitely a hyphen. Shows without a doubt there’d be not a whiff of possible colonialism or Trigger Alert! ownership.

  7. Why not make it a much bigger tent and call it the “Indignant Peoples’ Day”. That would make it a majority demographic national holiday.

Malcolm, I’m a grammar pedant, as you know. I’ve never been known to make an error.

Some of the more unusual rules of grammar are in my head even though the obvious sometimes escapes me. This is do know. My son used to work at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. It’s on the sign.

I used to ask sometimes about my nephew: how’s he going on and that kind of stuff. His name ends in the letter S. I can’t tell you strongly enough how quickly the email came back parroting my question and inserting the missing apostrophe.

My problem is this: so many people are unaware of this obscure grammatical quirk that it’s now acceptable to add the ‘S’ after the apostrophe. Which is annoying because it makes me look wrong and I need, occasionally, to be right.

This is getting stupid now. I meant to write Guy’s and St Thomas’. My moment of victory, I know my stuff, so cruelly snatched away.

Malcolm, it’s very difficult to post a comment here. I keep being asked multiple arithmetic questions and even though I am putting in the correct answers the next one pops up. Honestly.

    Musey,

I apologize for the inconvenience. I was forced to put in the Captcha filter because of ceaseless spamming that was overwhelming my server.

    OT:

I’d just like to take this opportunity to say I don’t think Malcolm has lost his bet whether Hillary will be the nominee. A lot could happen in the next few weeks until mid July.

I’m hoping that it seems that the FBI has gotten to many of the would be witnesses and have either granted immunity or have made deals. I hoping/educated guessing that the FBI is putting a shit load of evidence to DOJ attorneys. Probably so much, they might not be able to go through it all quickly in the near future.

Prediction. If DOJ doesn’t indict by, say, Octoberish, then ooooops, somehow some of that evidence fell online.

HIllary will then get her trial in the public with the public.

  12. I hope she gets more than just a “trial in the public with the public.” The public includes a majority of blithe liberals who don’t give a damn about criminal mishandling of classified information, even if it might have caused the death of American agents abroad. To the Left, her criminal acts are as trifling as those of a parking ticket scofflaw.

If anyone at one of our national laboratories, such as LANL, had done what she did, that person would be in federal prison.

From your lips to God’s ear, Troy. The convention’s just seven weeks away, and I want my damn whisky.
