Word Of The Day

Two, actually: baizuo, and shengmu. They’ll come in handy.

Update: I was remiss not to give a hat-tip to Nick Land for this.

Bob, you question the usefulness of shengmu. Actually, I think it is demonstrably a handy word.

Just yesterday I conceded to my wife that one of our lefty vegetarian friends was likeable and even intelligent. She in turn conceded that said friend is so overwhelmed by empathy for everything from fish to the members of gangs of refugee Somali teenagers (which, wielding machetes and tire irons, are terrorizing our erstwhile safe suburbs while hijacking luxury cars) that she is incapable of rational thinking.

‘Shengmu’ would have covered around fifteen of the words in that last over-long sentence.

A commenter at Nick Land’s points out that baizuo is in fact a Chinese-style acronym, comprised from the initial characters of 白痴 baichi, “moron”; and 左派 zuopai, “leftist”. But I am sure that what makes the acronym so delicious is that it does double duty by pointing out that the ethnomasochism it describes is mainly an affliction of Caucasians, not the sons of the Middle Kingdom.
