We note with sadness the passing of TV fitness coach Jack LaLanne, who has died at his California home at the age of 96. It’s a bit of a jolt to realize the man was mortal.
Mr. LaLanne taught generations of Americans the value of exercise; my mother and I used to follow along with his TV workouts when I was a little boy, long long ago. He also performed fantastic feats of strength and endurance, including doing 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes on live TV, and swimming from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf, towing a 1000-pound boat, handcuffed and shackled, at age 62.
