Monkey Steals Peach

One of the ways China has been eating our lunch lately is by sitting on the sidelines as we spend and bleed in God-forsaken Mideast ratholes, then snapping up the opportunities left behind as we stagger homeward with our pockets turned out. The latest example is here.

The countries snapping up Chinese ‘aid’ and investment are encouraged not only by material inducements – such as an agreement to write off 80% of Iraq’s debt to China – but also because China has no history of imperial ambition.

China can pose as the impoverished world’s best friend on the basis that it too was once an impotent feudal outpost that was plundered by Japanese imperialists and exploited by Western mountebanks.

That, and China isn’t us. The more competing interests they can play off each other, the better.
