Here’s one that I missed on Tuesday (and thanks to our friend Peter for mentioning it) — Paul Motian, a jazz drummer of sublime artistry and one of the most versatile and influential players of all time, died last week at the age of 80. (The cause was myelodysplastic syndrome, the same affliction that took Michael Brecker from us in 2007.)
I saw Mr. Motian play many times, and had always hoped that I would have a chance to work with him in the studio someday, but never did.
His genius was attentiveness, understatement, nuance, and elegance. There was nobody else like him.
Here he is with his quintet — featuring Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Marc Johnson, and Bill Frisell — back in 1995.

Wherever he is now, I’m sure that he is swinging.
Also there is no link to the performance with Lovano.
Yikes! Right you are. Fixed now. Thanks.
He will be missed. I wish I could have seen him with Keith Jarrett but I never had the chance. Oh well, his music will live on thanks to recording technology!
