As I have recently said, there is not much hope left for positive change. There is only resignation or, at best, a willingness to settle:

You’re right: Obama should be the first incumbent President in modern history to suspend his re-election campaign. The first rule of politics is this: when your opponent makes a fool of himself on a daily basis, get out of the way and give him the stage. Why bother campaigning?
Since Romney’s claim to the White House is his asserted status as an uber-Organization Man, the flaccidity of his dishonest, bumbling, and ineffective campaign is a shock to all. Even those who dislike him expected better than this. Republican candidates down-ticket are distancing themselves from him, his campaign staffers are eager to describe its dysfunction to the press, and recriminations are flying.
Maybe Americans will decide to put Mr. Burns in the White House. Maybe President Obama will kill a puppy on live television and declare next Tuesday to be Fidel Castro Day. Maybe I will win the Master’s Tournament next year. Obama might as well give up campaigning, as his opponent’s chances of victory are melting like an ice cube on hot pavement.
I’m not complaining, really; if Mr. Obama actually thinks he’s burnishing his appeal to voters by jetting off to Vegas the day after his ambassador was murdered (despite warnings of imminent peril), swanning around with fawning celebrities while the world catches fire, and pointing at months-old Romney clips in the hope of distracting everyone as his incoherent foreign policy blows up in his face, I suppose he’s doing the Republican campaign a favor.
No doubt it’s better for the nation at this point for him to be at the helm in Washington as little as possible; we’ve all come to have the same feeling when he’s busy at “work” as we do when the baby gets hold of a hammer.
Bush campaigned when the Iraq war was going on, Carter campaigned when Americans were held hostage in Iran, and for all I know Lincoln campaigned when the Civil War was going on. It’s a non-issue.
When Carter’s mission to rescue the hostages failed, Reagan issued a noble statement calling for national unity. When 241 Marines died under Reagan’s watch, you did not see Democrats pile on to declare his policy a disaster. When 9/11 happened, Democrats and Republicans rallied around the President, and Bush’s approval rating climbed to 91%.
If another 9/11 were to happen during an Obama administration, you can bet that his opponents would rush to explain why it was all his fault before the first responders get to the scene. Romney rushed to condemn Obama while events were still unfolding, and ended up with an inaccurate and incendiary statement which ended up making him look like a buffoon.
What does that tell you?
Talk to the hand. If Mr. Obama hadn’t made a career out of blaming absolutely everything that goes wrong under his stewardship on someone else (including recent events), you might be able to arouse a little sympathy. And as for statements made, Romney was right: it would have been nice if our officials had reminded our enemies that we don’t suppress free speech in America, instead of sympathizing with hurt feelings.
I don’t recall Reagan or Bush going on variety shows to kid around as the events you refer to were unfolding.
Somebody forgot his rabies shots.
That’s just a typo. I’ve corrected it.
A Freudian typo?
No doubt.
“Obama should be the first incumbent President in modern history to suspend his re-election campaign.”
“Carter campaigned when Americans were held hostage in Iran,”
Actually Carter followed a “Rose Garden” strategy.
