Sorry, gents. Had the tag outside the text.

I’ve been getting really sloppy lately.

I assume we all remember Asta, or my title makes no sense.

  9. Malcolm,

If by Asta you meant ASTA, then your title is misleading, because the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) is an acronym, which should be ALL CAPS.

No, I’m talking about the iconic Asta, Nick and Nora Charles’s wire-haired terrier in all those Thin Man movies (starring William Powell and the exquisite Myrna Loy).

  11. “I’m talking about the iconic Asta, …”

I have heard of the “Thin Man” movies, but I never saw any of them. I guess the mileage for cultural icons may vary.

Some writers say that the terms “icon” and “iconic” have been overused. A writer in Liverpool Daily Post calls “iconic” “a word that makes my flesh creep,” a word “pressed into service to describe almost anything.”

You’re right. The word is overused. I will underuse it henceforward.

  13. One could say that “iconic” is the iconic cliche. But one would be advised against it.
