I heard it again just the other day. It’s from some sappy movie a few decades back:
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
What idiot wrote this? Love means constantly having to say you’re sorry.

Constantly saying it especially if you are a man. Most especially if you are a married man who has just won the argument!
Erich Segal
I sounds like you have ‘Love’ and ‘Marriage’ mixed up.
Heh, which reminds me of a favorite line from the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes – Henry Baker: At this season of the year, more than ever, we must not deprive those we love. Or even those to whom we are married.

Ahh, a Jeremy Brett fan! I thought I was the only one. He was and always will be “Sherlock Holmes”. I have the entire series on dvd.
I’m another Brett fan. I actually like all the versions of Sherlock Holmes, but Brett is the essential Holmes, and David Burke is the best Watson.
Bob Sykes, bless you sir!
It’s clearly a sociopath’s definition of love: “If you really loved me, you wouldn’t ask me to apologize for any of my antisocial behavior, you’d accept me just as I am”.
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
What a sorry thing to say.

I’ve heard stupider:
I think most people know its dumb Mr pollack. For instance, I heard three separate preachers over the years condemn it.
Kidding aside, consider the possibility that this admittedly sentimental expression was intended by Erich Segal to be taken as an idealized goal for lovers to avoid hurting each other in any way.

I’d say that for “stupidest thing ever said” honors, it’s in a tight race with “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.”
