    But then comes Thermidor. Although unlike the French Revolution, I don’t there’s going to be a dysfunctional Directory and then Napoleon. Rather there will be a reversion to the Middle Ages, without the benefits of a strong state (at its best one of the great benefits of the Modern Age). In other words new kinds of lords, vassals, fiefs – except not illuminated necessarily by the mercy of Christ.
