Drive Home

Unless you’re au fait with the musical genre known as “progresssive rock”, you’ve probably never heard of the British musician and producer Steven Wilson. He’s best known as the leader of the now-defunct band Porcupine Tree, but he’s also made quite a few records on his own. I admire his work, which is always good and has moments of real brilliance.

While much of what he’s done is hard and edgy, he’s especially good at writing sad and beautiful songs. Here’s an example, from his solo album The Raven That Refused To Sing. It features a gorgeous solo by guitarist Guthrie Govan.

(Headphones or good speakers, please.)

Yes that was great…reminded me of Canterbury scene bands like Caravan but very refined. I grew up in the era of ” English whimsy” so I recognise some of the echoes to that era, but also there is something of Jeff Beck in that solo don’t you think? I’d never heard of Wilson before so thanks for the tip.
My son is following that drummer you posted about…I might try and suggest he listens to a bit of prog now he is advancing…

The album cover seems like it could be “Pink Floyd-ish”. Nice blend of horns and guitar at around 4:30 or so. Good clean bass.

I agree with Whitewall it does have similarities to Pink Floyd (One of my favorite groups). The video was the most poignant I have ever seen. I can see myself as the man were I to lose my wife.

    Peace,
    Bill
