   To be clear.

   Where I live the residents, mostly, grew up with our law enforcement officers. Our parents knew their parents, went to church with their parents. And our parents knew their Grandparents, as we knew the parents of ours. We attended the same churches, the same funerals, celebrated the births. All the same.

   My county Sheriff I attended with, I in first grade he second all the way through together to our high school senior grade. Shared the same teachers.

   There was an opening at the cop shop which he got I went into the Navy. I bragged to him, “I’m off to see the world!” (Recall the advertising back then.)

   My first duty station?

   NAS Memphis. Three hours from home. Before the roads were four-laned. True NAS Memphis wasn’t exactly right in Memphis but it was near enough to call it spittin’ distance. Town name of Millington.

   Life worked as it does and through that all I did see the world and after a fashion I reckon he did too – except for one certain area of something I still get sometimes, personal phonecalls concerning “What the hell”?

   I answer those best I can but when I can’t I know who to call to find out.

   Usually, generally locally. F’instance I know a retired U-2 pilot lives near and a couple of guys I can get with so’s between us [our] Arabic, Farsi, Pashtu and Urdu don’t get too awful rusty. Neither our um … stuff, like the cops got in common with us, sort of stuff. Other sorts of besides too.

   There’s a couple bridges separates us from Memphis and guess what?

   I; not a cop – “can carry” – my local Friends/Cops?

   They can’t. Not even traveling as ostensible plain ol’ everyday citizens.

   Care to hazard a guess why?

   It’s a multi agency team — running the warrant round-up consisting of Mobile County Sheriff’s deputies, Homeland Security, and agents with the U.S. Marshals Office. Sheriff Cochran tells us it was not one of his deputies that fired the shots.

   Still it’s disingenuous in my opinion, for the Sheriff to deflect. While I suppose a “podunk County Sheriff” might be forgiven such a simple thing one would think Federal law enforcement to be situationally aware.
