    They made it all the way through interstellar space, only to crash when they encountered Earth. They musta got distracted from something they shoulda been paying attention to.

    I think these stories are placeholders, they haven’t yet decided how to play it out in future. It will either be “benevolent advanced aliens urge mankind to unite under our wise and compassionate elites” or “hostile advanced aliens threaten mankind which needs to unite under our wise and compassionate elites”.
