Just Wondering

I hear there was some sort of political debate last night. How did it go?

    I didn’t watch it.

I watched portions of Tucker’s interview with Trump.

Our society is very sick and broken, on every level.

The catastrophic fires in Maui and the sheer scale of the corruption and incompetence in relation to the fires is proof enough of how miserable everything is, and how demoralized the general public is.

Beyond that, the last election was obviously rigged, so I don’t know exactly what to expect from another election cycle.

Frankly, I just don’t see the point.

    Dave,

I think an awful lot of us feel this way, and the disconnection between those who see how degraded everything is and those who don’t is also intensely disturbing.

Today I ran into a friend at a local beach — not a close friend, but a highly educated woman in her early seventies whom I’ve known for quote a few years now, and who is a good friend of other friends of mine. We were chatting about this and that, and the debate came up, which of course she hadn’t watched. She started talking about who she thought had been good presidents, and then she said that she thought that Joe Biden was near the top of the list.

She mentioned as evidence lower inflation, his work for the environment, and a great economy. I changed the subject.

How can we go on like this?

In answer to your question… we can’t go on like this.

Many millions, like your friend, are completely brainwashed. There is no other way to describe that kind of disconnect from reality.

At least the people of the Soviet Union knew they were being lied to. They knew it was all a sham.

Half our country is completely entranced by the Big Lie.

There is no reaching them, or reasoning with them. You could sit that woman down at a table and lay out documentary evidence to support your positions, and she literally wouldn’t see it. She can’t see it.

I don’t know where we go from here. A lot of people are hoping a political figure will ride to the rescue, but much of our culture is too degraded, people too demoralized, to mount an adequate, and sustained, revival.

    I hope I’m wrong, but I fear I’m not.

    Another Dave,
I’m reading you and hearing you. In the retirement community where my wife and I live, there are many 70 somethings here that fit that bill. They are lifelong Ds and all they know is what they hear on the evening network news and that is that. Anything beyond the ‘news’ is just nonsense and they have given themselves permission to disregard it. I’m not sure that this is ‘brainwashed’ as it is brains never applied to current problems and their causes.

There will be no national figure ride to the rescue but rather thousands of local figures to do it and we must back him. Of course their is A Figure who can be found, who has never left us…but that is another subject entirely. HE is a figure these mindless Ds fear more than all the Trumps and MAGAs in the world put together.

Affluent 70-somethings are in a cocoon and come from a different country. This is among the reasons I think the age limit for public service should be 65. Outside some exceptional, engaged people, one lacks the in-the-trenches perspective and involvement in the culture of the net tax-payors in their 30s through 50s.

But I would think these people at least buy groceries and services. Anyone who does should be aware inflation is still rampaging through the economy.
