I’ve been nursing a surprisingly debilitating cold (or flu, or something) for the past few days. It makes it difficult to summon up the energy to do much of anything, and I’ve been unable to concentrate the little grey cells enough to write anything worth reading. (I did manage another comment or two in that thread over at Bill’s place, but am unfit for anything more substantial.)
Back soon, I hope.

You are not alone. A persistent, and rather strong, flu/cold is circulating among all age groups right now.
My whole family had it over the last 2 weeks, and everyone we know has had some version of it over the past month.
Thanks, Dave. I’ll be glad to be over it. I have a lot I should be doing, and I’m nowhere near being fit for purpose.
I am pretty sure I had the Omicron variant in February 2022. I will never forget it, because I was watching my father pass away at the time. Knock on wood, I have not been ill since.
Way back in 2016, I was coming around to the idea that I should vote for Trump. I told my wise old dad I was contemplating doing something I hadn’t done since 1996: vote, and vote for Trump. He gave me a very serious, solemn look and said, “Oh, you have to.”
It made a profound impression on me, because my father was what you would call a true American loyalist and what used to be called a “company man” who voted for George W Bush both times.
Trump is a last raised middle finger to the by now completely deranged Establishment. We are now in post-politics, and it is a true Clash of Civilizations, but in a way nobody could have foreseen. I know people who have left the US over it. The thought that this is now about territory and not ideology horrifies them.
I and my immune system-compromised spouse, both unvaxxed for covid, have not had cold nor flu during the entire covid era. We daily take supplemental vitamin D & C, quercetin, & zinc, and do occasional nasal sinus saline rinse using warm distilled water. I don’t know if our efforts are the reason for our lack of colds and flu, but I am glad she has done the reading to back up her insistence that we continue. I recommend it if you aren’t already up to speed on that protocol. I have been dealing with some strange connective tissue inflammation this past week that gets worse during the night. Advil cuts through it.
Hoping you bounce back quickly and thoroughly.
mharko,
Thanks. I do already take C and D and a multivitamin that contains zinc, and I actually have one of those Naväge gizmos that I use almost every day (I highly recommend it to you all, by the way, and you can easily hack it so you don’t have to buy the costly little saline pods). I very rarely get sick. On Sunday, as we were driving to NYC, I noticed I was coughing a bit, and then on Monday night as I drove the 300 miles back to Wellfleet (starting at 10 p.m., after dropping the lovely Nina at JFK for her flight to Hong Kong), I realized I was coming down with something serious. It isn’t the Wuhan Red Death (I checked), but it feels like that disease did: a hacking cough, nasty headache, continuous rhinorrhea, brain fog, and deep fatigue.
I think it’s the brain fog that bothers me most, TBH. I like to be able to think.
(No, I take that back: it’s the hacking cough, nasty headache, continuous rhinorrhea, brain fog, and deep fatigue. I can do without thinking for a few days; I probably do too much of it anyway.)
One other thought that is worth mentioning: A younger family member has been researching Fifth Generation wireless radio frequency, and is mandating some adjustments to our physical use and proximity to our various devices, especially cellphones. She cites studies showing serious risks wrt 5G, among which are brain fog, fatigue and worse. And telecom industry controls the FCC so safety standards reflect regulatory capture. They don’t want to be bothered with studies of long term low level repetitive exposure.
It seems 5G has been a multifaceted disaster.
