Peter Yarrow, 1938-2025

I note with sadness the death of Peter Yarrow, who was known to everyone of my generation as part of the enormously popular folk-music trio Peter, Paul and Mary.

I mixed two Peter, Paul and Mary albums — Flowers and Stones (1986), and No Easy Walk To Freedom (1990) — and I remember Peter as a jovial, slightly goofy fellow who was a pleasure to work with. I hadn’t seen him in decades, but I’m sorry to hear that he is gone. His death leaves Noel Paul Stookey, now 87, as the last surviving member. (Noel, my condolences, and I hope you are well.)

I did not mix any albums, but I bought many by PP&M. It was in fact their rendition of “A-Soalin'” that led me to learn guitar. It was a simple chord change – from D major to D Minor, I learned later – in their “It’s Raining”, that enraptured me before I knew any music.
I enjoyed them and owe them a lot. Peter Yarrow, God bless.

A fine tribute, Malcolm. It was PP & M’s version of “Don’t Think Twice” that first made me aware of Dylan way back in ’63.

What a time it was, as Dave, who is older than both of us, well appreciates. It’s too bad you are so young, Malcolm, and therefore not fully equipped to appreciate that amazing East Coast folk scene in and around Greenwich Village and Cambridge, Mass.

Vito C. is well-equipped age-wise and he lived in the Village.
