As Good As It Gets

If I were to ask you, readers of a certain age, to think of rock music’s all-time greatest guitarists, I have a feeling that the thirty-three-year-old Derek Trucks might not be among the pantheon that swims into view.

He should be, though. To get an idea why, have a look here.

    Excellent, tasteful playing.

My one nitpick would be Derek’s tendency to climax his solos with a barfing effect i.e. screaming high lick, whack open strings, screaming high lick, whack open strings and so on, which sits incongrously with the otherwise maturity of his playing. It’s the musical equivalent of the droning “uuuuuuurr” sound some people utter during a pause in their speech to prevent others interjecting. I predict he’ll eventually swap this tic for something more articulate (or else a more interesting depiction of inarticulacy).

This isn’t the kind of music I usually seek out, but spent an hour watching them on YouTube. Looks like there’ll always be a place for solid, well played, blues rock.

Extra points for the pleasing absence of “guitar face”.

I like the guitar players who don’t use picks.

I enjoyed this piece. Sadly, I’m only finding it on YouTube.

fwiw: A version, but not the one in question, does appear on The Derek Truck Band’s “Roadsongs”, sans Susan Tedeschi.
