Be It Ever So Humble…

…there’s no place like home. The lovely Nina and I are back from our little trip abroad. We visited Slovenia and Croatia with our daughter and her young family, who had driven down from their home in Vienna to meet us, and we had a fine time getting to know these beautiful places a bit — but as they say, the best thing about traveling is coming home.

We are weary from the time-change, and from yesterday’s long day of travel, and we have a lot to do do to get our house back in order after having put all our stuff away to rent the place while we were gone. But it’s good to be back to familiar things (in particular it’s nice to have a proper shower that isn’t a tub with a little hose, and to have ice available at the push of a button), and to have access to my computer again.

I will be getting the blog up and running again in the next day or two. In particular there are a couple of outstanding essays I want to share with you.

  2. Croatia and Slovenia – you lucky bugger!

The ‘Memsahib’ and I went there a few years back. We had a week on the coast at Pore? which has the great advantage of cruise ship which pops back and forth to Venice allowing you to visit the sites but not suffer the crowds – and the expense!

Then we drove up into Slovenia and stayed near Bled with its beautiful lake and the tiny, charming island with the small chapel on it where we watched a couple set off in a tiny boat to be married. I would say that Slovenia is the most beautiful country in Europe.

  3. Sorry, that should have been “Porec”.

Like David Duff said above, Slovenia is a gem. I seem to remember all the churches being lit up at night there. And I suppose you rang the bell in the church in the middle of Lake Bled, like everybody and his grandmother.

Yes, Slovenia is a beautiful place. We spent a couple of days in Ljubljana, and four days in Piran (which is a lovely old town, with a pronounced Venetian influence, on a tiny peninsula jutting into the Adriatic).

We did not get to Bled, though, or the alpine areas of the north. Next time!
