A little while back I had David Bowie’s 1977 song Heroes — probably my favorite of all his songs, and that’s saying something — stuck in my head. I thought it might be fun to go downstairs to the studio and see if I could knock it off on my own.
Here’s a rough mix of the result. (All instruments and vocals by yours truly.)
P.S. Headphones or proper speakers, if you’d be so kind — please don’t listen on those ratty little laptop speakers. Thanks.

“Rough mix”, he said.
I am well impressed. Most impressed by the vocals.
When does the album come out?
My word Malcolm! How in the world did you nail the pitch of ‘Bowie’s voice’ right down to the ‘English’ treatment of words and even syllables?
Like BEL asked, when’s the album coming? Need an aging roadie?
I’m very much an ignoramous concerning pop and music in general, but your rendition seemed to me quite effective and moving Malcolm, especially your voice as BEL and Whitewall have noted. I’ll admit I didn’t know “Heroes,” being familiar only with Bowie’s “greatest hits” like “Space Oddity.” An interesting song; I like the simple lines: “I, I will be king/ And you, you will be queen.” Although also a very sad and tragic song, no?
My favorite Bowie song, too. It’s also how I discovered his appeal (by watching old concert clips). I grew up knowing about him and thinking that he was weird. My most extensive contact with him was Labyrinth (I grew up on Henson and miss weird 80’s fantasy, which for better or worse must have been a pretty formative influence on me). Then, after watching concerts videos as an adult, it struck me how charismatic he was — how he appeared to share himself with the audience, having an unearthly, bewitching magic.
I’ve tried recording myself playing multiple parts–its HARD. Congratulations on a success.
FANTASTIC! Just heard this on the car radio yesterday and sang along at the top of my lungs.
The German and French versions are also amazing. xoxo
Thanks all!
Awesome job! I listened over my KRKs and “This is what it sounded like in the studio!”, if our host remembers telling that story. If not, then I’ll happily tell it for you!
Malc, that is seriously f**king impressive. Let’s do it at Star.
