   I’m sorry for your family’s loss Malcolm, although I’d imagine this is compensated by reflection on the extraordinary life your mother-in-law had. In addition to being quite the looker – since presumably her daughter inherited this pleasant phenotype then you must be a very lucky man! – she obviously had a formidable intelligence. It’s such a cliche to reflect on, but no less moving for all that, how brilliant Ashkenazi fled the horrors of Europe during the modern age and were able to in so many ways enlighten and ennoble America (for the most part anyway, with such records always being mixed for any great people – even gold is not unalloyed). From what I gather she had never even read a comic book during her youth, but because of her artistic abilities learnt in fin-di-siècle Vienna was able to rather seamlessly assimilate into that realm for a period of time. And looking at the graphics of Senorita Rio from the Internet evokes some nostalgia in me, notably for the eroticism of the heroine and how she represents a delicious tension of another epoch. between prudery of the past and the let-it-all-hang-out pornography of the present.

   Thanks, Jason. Her passing, at 101, can hardly be considered a tragedy – but I’ll say no more about that.

   And yes, my Nina did inherit both brains and beauty, so I will thank Lily for that.

   What shines through is how she worked hard with no complaints.

   I loved this blurb: “She objected to being called a feminist,” her daughter, Nina Phillips, told The Guardian in 2019, “as she thought modern feminism was too ideological and went too far…”
