This afternoon, a commenter on our previous post asked me:
Malcolm, are you cynical?
Meanwhile, an old friend wrote me today to quote something I had, apparently, said to him when I was about 17 or 18. I don’t remember saying it, but here it is anyway:
Everyone needs a pack of lies to live by, and if you’d rather not create your own there’s no shortage of people who’ll be happy to hand you theirs.
So, I don’t know. Could be, I guess.

Nice to make your acquaintance, Dr. House.
Some people prefer to bury their heads in the sand. I prefer to be realistic. I might add that you were precocious at 17 for such a quote.
My favorite pack of lies? A pack of cigarettes — back in the days when tobacco companies claimed that smoking wouldn’t harm your health. But can one live by that pack?
