    Another example that drives me nuts – headlines reading “99 Dead, including 12 Women and Children!” 77 men dead is a statistic; 12 women and children dead is a tragedy.

    Jason’s right. Men have always been expendable. (See this post from 2013.) It has always been considered the honorable thing for men to place themselves between women and danger. (And rightly so, I think.)

    What’s annoying here is that we are simultaneously expected to regard sexual difference as a pernicious fiction; chivalrous, protective impulses as “toxic masculinity”; and yet to see men actually dying as mattering less than women having more chores to do than men.
